How I Earn Money From My Free Substack Newsletter

Giving stuff away can be surprisingly lucrative

A month or so ago I started a Substack newsletter as part of my 2024, everything-is-changing, three-platforms-only revamp. Substack allows you to offer either a free or paid newsletter option, or both at the same time.

You can start by offering a free newsletter only, and turn on paid subscriptions at a later date. You can even ask readers to make a pledge, to show they’d be interested in paying for your newsletter, should you decide to offer that as an option.

It’s been a steep learning curve, and one of the things I’ve learned is that I definitely don’t want to turn on paid subscriptions anytime soon. That’s because when and if I do, I want to really provide something special: lots of extra content, courses, and giveaways. A really glorious, worthwhile, super-useful package that my community will absolutely love.

A paid newsletter on Substack needs to — in my opinion — really over-deliver. The best ones provide something more like a membership site, rather than just a few extra newsletter posts, and that will take time to develop.

In the meantime, I’m keeping my newsletter free, and still earning money from it. Here’s how.
